Job Title: Water Meter Reader
Wage: $23.60 - $25.87 hourly (2023)
Reports to: Manager, Revenue and Taxation
Location: Lindsay, with travel across City of Kawartha Lakes as required per job duties
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30pm)
Job Description:
- Collect and record consumer water meters readings manually, with a hand-held device, or remotely in accordance with an assigned schedule and route; identify sites for meter reading and use maps to establish a systematic route and ensure accuracy of readings
- Examine meters for signs of tampering and report inoperative, leaking, malfunctioning, or damaged meters and registers; tag property; report hazard including gas orders and exposed electrical wiring; report violations of backflow prevention
- Installation and replace water meters
- Repair water meters and perform routine maintenance; remove meters for calibration; clean brush, dirt or vines away from meter boxes
- Answer general questions regarding billing or other utilities-related subjects, or refer issues to Utility Billing staff and/or supervisor as appropriate; advise the public of rules, codes and procedures
- Deliver non-payment and shut-down notices; turn water services on and off as required; make appointments for readings to be re-checked
- Required to investigate consumer related problems including, but not limited to high water bills, leaks, and low water pressure and report findings to Utility Billing Staff
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Skills/Education Required
- Secondary School Diploma
- Experience in a municipal setting preferred
- Ability to obtain a Water Meter Installer certificate within a 3 month timeframe
- Knowledge of water and sewer systems with basic plumbing skills essential
- Knowledge of meter reading software would be an asset
- Demonstrated professional and ethical responsibility to protect privacy, use confidential information appropriately, treat sensitive situations with appropriate degree of tact and discretion
- Effective oral communication and strong interpersonal skills to deal with members of the public, council and all levels of staff
- Ability to demonstrate initiative consistently with commitment to quality improvement, sharing process improvement initiatives with management
- Demonstrated time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy
- Ability to work independently or as an effective member of a team
- Good analytical and problem solving skills related to area of expertise
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, the internet, and any other related software
- Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence
- Upon a conditional offer of employment, a Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search will be required
